Throughout dinner, Dan was distracted by the crowd at the bar. Young women with short skirts and tight sweaters, or sequined tops and ass-hugging jeans, flitted around college-aged guys with khakis or jeans and polo shirts.

Meanwhile, Ian only had eyes for his double bacon burger. Dan shook his head. The guy could eat like no one else.

Dan sipped his second Hot Blooded and glanced at the bar again. Three young men laughed loudly, bumping elbows and slapping each other’s backs. There was a game on the bar’s flat screen, but unlike the other young men, these three weren’t paying attention to it. Instead, they were talking and laughing and touching each other a lot.

Dan scanned the surrounding patrons, but no one seemed to notice or mind their open affection.

One of the guys, wearing jeans tighter than the rest, hoisted himself onto a barstool. His perfect bubble butt hung slightly over the rear edge of the seat. Dan looked away to find Ian staring at the guy’s ass, too. Fuck. Dan took another sip of his drink.

“So, you never told me how your mom’s doing in the nursing home.”

Dan nodded, relieved at the diversion. He told Ian about how his mom was acting like a queen who’d finally been restored to her throne. Ordering people around, sipping free tea and cocoa all day long, instructing the staff on how to properly set a table.

Ian chuckled and polished off the last of his fries.

“Ha, ha! I will, man!” One of the guys from the bar, clearly drunk, laughed as he walked past, presumably on his way to the restrooms. He wore a thin gray shirt tucked into his jeans that showcased his trim torso and muscled chest.

Dan sat straighter and sucked in his gut.

Ian had been distracted by the guy’s too-loud comment as well, but returned his attention to Dan, smiling. “Kids.”

Dan laughed. “Yeah.”

They decided on one more cocktail in lieu of dessert, but it was barely half gone before Dan wished they’d just left. The guys were getting louder as they drank more, and now Dan was almost certain they were gay. They strutted around each other, flirting and laughing, and drawing Ian’s attention more than a few times.

Was that the kind of guy Ian wanted? Young and thin? Dan tried to act unaffected.

Ian talked about life in his new apartment, all the things he still needed to buy. He talked about his neighbor, Aaron, who he apparently had known before, and mentioned a few new neighbors he’d met recently.

Dan smiled as he held his back straight and flexed his abs.

When Ian snatched the check and slipped his card in, Dan leaned forward to protest, but Ian held up his palm. “I got this. Really.”

Dan let it go. He’d been grilling Ian too much about money lately.

After dinner, they walked through the parking lot. Ian stopped at an unfamiliar car. “This is me.” His mouth twisted with a restrained smile.

“What? You got a new car?” Dan studied the vehicle.

Ian shrugged. “Mostly. One year old.
